A computational model for processing of semi-crystalline polymers: The effects of flow-induced crystallization

چکیده

A computational model for the combined processes of quiescent and flowinduced crystallization of polymers is presented. This modelling should provide the necessary input data, in terms of the structure distribution in a product, for the prediction of mechanical properties and shapeand dimensional-stability. Rather then the shear rate as the driving force, a viscoelastic approach is proposed, where the viscoelastic stress (or the equivalent recoverable strain) with the highest relaxation time, a measure for the molecular orientation and stretch of the high end tail molecules, is the driving force for flow induced crystallization. Thus, the focus is on the polymer that experiences the flow, rather then on the flow itself. Results are presented for shear flow, extensional flow and for injection moulding conditions of an isotactic Polypropylene (iPP).

A Phase Field Technique for Modeling and Predicting Flow Induced Crystallization Morphology of Semi-Crystalline Polymers

Abstract: Flow induced crystallization of semi-crystalline polymers is an important issue in polymer science and engineering because the changes in morphology strongly affect the properties of polymer materials. In this study, a phase field technique considering polymer characteristics was established for modeling and predicting the resulting morphologies. The considered crystallization process...

Kinetics and Morphology of Flow Induced Polymer Crystallization in 3D Shear Flow Investigated by Monte Carlo Simulation

To explore the kinetics and morphology of flow induced crystallization of polymers, a nucleation-growth evolution model for spherulites and shish-kebabs is built based on Schneider rate model and Eder model. The model considers that the spherulites are thermally induced, growing like spheres, while the shish-kebabs are flow induced, growing like cylinders, with the first normal stress differenc...

Prediction of Flow Effect on Crystal Growth of Semi-Crystalline Polymers Using a Multi-Scale Phase-Field Approach

A multi-scale phase-field approach, which couples the mesoscopic crystallization with the microscopic orientation of chain segments and macroscopic viscoelastic melt flow, is proposed to study how the crystal growth of semi-crystalline polymers is affected by flows. To make the simulation feasible, we divide the problem into three parts. In the first part, a finitely extensible nonlinear elasti...
